Hay Sampling Protocol
Forage Analysis: An Essential Step to Balance Your Horse’s Diet
A forage analysis provides accurate information about the nutrients your horse receives from hay or pasture every day. It is the foundation for designing a balanced diet, as it helps determine whether the forage meets your horse’s needs or if adjustments in feed and mineral supplements are required. An analysis also makes it possible to identify unsuitable or poor-quality forage that could negatively affect your horse’s health.
What does a forage analysis include?
A complete analysis typically measures:
- Digestible energy
- Protein values (crude and soluble protein)
- Dry matter content
- Sugar and fat levels
- Fiber profile (including crude fiber and cellulose)
- Macro- and microminerals: Sodium, Potassium, Magnesium, Calcium, Phosphorus, Sulphur, Chloride, Manganese, Zinc, Iron, Copper, Molybdenum, Iodine, Boron, Cobalt, and Selenium
How long does a forage analysis take?
Results are generally available within 20 to 25 days after the laboratory receives your sample.
